Do You Know the #1 Complication of Childbirth?
By Tricia Miller, Founder of Healthy Moms of Life
Did you know that depression is the number #1 complication in childbirth, and 1 in 7 new mothers experience symptoms of depression and/or anxiety? May is Maternal Mental Health Month, and just wanted to highlight a Mom's experience with postpartum depression. This blog post from Postpartum Progress shares a Mom’s insight with her postpartum depression, which is often a topic that our culture is still fully not aware about–even among health professionals and caregivers!
Sadly, many moms hide their suffering in secret, feeling shameful and guilty as they experience these powerful and uncertain emotions. As a therapist that has focused her attention on new mothers in the last several years, I have seen tremendous strides in moms who experience postpartum illness. With incorporating a practical self-care routine, building a strong support network, attending therapy, and seeking proper medical treatment (as needed), Moms are able to feel a sense of hope, and make progress in their emotional well-being and physical health.
